About Me

Brynne Johannsen, Ph.D.

I am a clinical psychologist specializing in the provision of evidence-based psychotherapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I have extensive experience treating a full-spectrum of traumas, including combat, sexual/physical abuse/assault (childhood and adulthood), intimate partner violence, attachment disruption, motor vehicle accidents, and natural disasters.

I have been in practice as a licensed psychologist for 17 years, including 13 years with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

I developed a passion for psychology early in life, curious about how differences in one’s biology and environment can lead to different outcomes. Early in my career, I was drawn to working with underserved populations, particularly those who experienced the intersection of trauma, familial dysfunction, substance use, and the criminal justice system. I wanted to do something to change these outcomes.

As I have progressed in my career, my focus has narrowed to a specialty in trauma treatment. I have been fortunate to be trained in multiple evidence-based trauma treatments by leading pioneers and researchers in the field; however, I have learned the most from working with clients and seeing the way different interventions result in change. I believe I excel at intuitively customizing interventions to the client, fostering self-compassion and self-confidence, and bringing a deeply human connection to the therapy relationship. My clients have shared with me that they appreciate how personable and “human” I am. People often ask me how I deal with hearing trauma details all day; my answer is that I get a lot of meaning, purpose, and satisfaction with being able to bear witness to and provide a safe space for people to discuss the worst things that have happened to them, but mostly to be able to witness the joy and relief as people reclaim their lives. I would be honored to be considered as a passenger on your journey.

Education and Training

I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Portland State University in 2003, and my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a Forensic emphasis from Pacific Graduate School of Psychology at Palo Alto University in 2008. I completed my APA-accredited internship with the Central California Psychology Internship Consortium, specifically with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. My post-doctoral residency hours were also completed with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Professional Experience

I worked for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation as a staff psychologist from 2008 to 2012. In this setting, I worked with the general population, serious mental illness (SMI) population, and in an acute psychiatric setting.

I worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs from 2012 to 2025. During my time with the VA, I conducted disability examinations for compensation & pension (2 years), worked in a sub-acute mental health residential setting (3 years), and in an outpatient PTSD Specialty Clinic delivering evidence-based treatment to Veterans for 8 years.

My private practice, Trauma Recovery Services, LLC was established in 2025 in Ashland, OR. The practice specializes in the provision of evidence-based treatment for PTSD and co-occurring conditions (e.g., depression, substance use). I also specialize in grief-related conditions. Appointments are available in-person for local clients or via telehealth throughout the state of Oregon and California. I only work with adults.
